Work

Things I've made.

Apps I design, build and run myself under Six Paths Software.

Snapshot Money

Your income, bills and budgets, day by day.

A personal cashflow planner. Add your income, bills and budgets and see your balance projected day by day across the year, colour-coded so the tight weeks stand out before you get to them.

Petodoro

A cosy pomodoro timer with a pet.

A hand-drawn focus timer for Android. Pick a pet, start a session, and it curls up for a nap on the chair while you work, then wakes up when it's time for a break. Free, with no accounts, ads or tracking.

Petodoro's home screen: a lilac cat sits on a pink armchair in an autumn-evening room above a 25:00 focus timer.

Sploosh

A calm water-sort puzzle with a story.

Pour water between tubes until each one holds a single colour, then follow the rainbow river on through 24 zones of animated scenery, with Quackers the duck and his lost ducklings along the way. Built for Android.

Sploosh's story map: a rainbow river winds through City Park past wooden level signs, rabbits and trees, with Quackers the duck at level 63.

About me

Hi, I'm Jack.

I've spent 15 years building software for real businesses, from leading development teams to designing, shipping and running products of my own. I care about the whole job: understanding the problem, writing code that's easy to change, and keeping it running long after launch.

  • Contract experience

    NHS GP software

Building a next-generation electronic patient record used every day by NHS GP practices, with improvements shipped every week.

  • Technical Director

    Elogbooks, now Vantify

Led the development team behind Elogbooks, the facilities management software now part of Vantify, and spearheaded the launch of Elogbooks Facilities Services, now Vantify Facilities Services.

  • My own products

    Snapshot Money, Petodoro and Sploosh

Designed, built and run a cashflow planner, a pomodoro timer app and a water-sort puzzle game for Android, from the first idea to the live service.

Tools I reach for: PHP, Symfony, Laravel, TypeScript, Vue, React, React Native, Node, MySQL, Docker

How I work

Every stage, not just the code.

I'm at home across the whole life of a project, so you can bring me in wherever you need me.

Hover over or tap a stage to see what's involved.

  1. Plan

Understand the problem, the people it’s for, and what success looks like.

  2. Design

Shape the architecture, data and user experience before a line of code is written.

  3. Build

Clean, well-structured code, delivered in small steps you can see and review.

  4. Test

Automated and hands-on testing, so problems are caught early and cheaply.

  5. Release

Safe, repeatable deployments. No drama on launch day.

  6. Support

Monitor, maintain and learn from real use, then feed it all back into the next plan.

…then back to Plan, with everything we've learned.
